Expanded Course Description
For most graduate students, the job search process can be a confusing and intimidating experience. It can be hard to know how to approach the process to find fellowships and jobs that are a good fit. It can also be challenging to strategize about ways to present your work, interests, and experience in succinct and compelling ways to a search committee. Both those in the middle of their graduate studies and those getting closer to the end of their graduate studies are welcome to participate! This workshop is designed to de-mystify the academic job market and help you develop application materials for post-doctoral fellowships, academic jobs, and other kinds of positions that can draw on the skills and experience you have been developing during your graduate studies. The workshop also helps to build a community of mutual support and problem-solving as you navigate the search and applications process. Mindful of the workload with teaching, research, and coursework, the workshop is meant to offer a focused space to think about and develop job materials in a way that complements the other demands on participants’ time. It is meant to make things more efficient intellectually and emotionally rather than adding to participants’ workload. We will be moving at a modest pace which can be adjusted individually depending on what opportunities or needs arise. For the most part, the workshop will be “hands-on” with a lot of ongoing discussion and editing of work in small groups and via individual consultation. We will also have options for participants to practice interviews with peers and/or faculty panels. In the past, many participants have found it useful to be a part of the workshop even if they are not planning on actively searching for fellowships or jobs in that academic year. It can be helpful to get a sense of what the search process looks like and what kinds of documents you need to draft a bit in advance. Some folks find their “dream job” appears unexpectedly and they have the materials to apply sooner than they originally planned. Many others have found it useful to be a part of the workshop more than once—when they’re getting a sense of things and then again in a subsequent year when they’re actively applying for positions and fellowships. Those who are close to the end of their graduate studies are especially urged to take advantage of the workshop to develop search strategies and application documents and prepare for interviews and possible campus visits. The workshop will combine both individual consultation and strategizing along with group elements in preparing materials that are typically requested of applicants.
