Expanded Course Description
MATH 101 is designed to prepare students for success in courses that require skills from intermediate algebra. The course covers the basic math skills, but focuses more on issues of problem-solving and mathematical modeling. The course centers on topics related to the following skills:

simplifying and evaluating algebraic expressions, solving and simplifying linear equations in one or two variables, interpreting a point on a graph (especially a line) in the context of a word problem, interpreting constants in the equation of a line in the context of a word problem, graphing linear equations in two variables, determining the intercepts of a given line whether from a graph or from an equation, setting up and solving a variety of world problems based on linear equations or systems of equations (using substitution), manipulating exponential expressions, solving quadratic equations, solving word problems involving quadratic equations, determining from a table of values or formula whether or not a relationship between between two variables is linear, writing an equation defining a relationship between variables in a piecewise manner, interpreting the result of mathematical processes in a non-mathematical context, expressing written descriptions between variables as the graph of or formula for that relationship.
