Expanded Course Description
The course covers content from Chapters 1, 2, and 3 of “Calculus for the Life Sciences”, by Adler.

The course text is a custom edition of “Modeling the Dynamics of Life: Calculus and Probability for the Life Sciences”, 3rd ed, by Adler. Either the custom edition or the national version of the text are sufficient for the course.

MATH 246 discusses techniques and life science applications of differential calculus, along with an introduction to discrete dynamical systems. Topics include limits and continuity, differentiation rules for rational, exponential, logarithmic, and trigonometric functions. The dynamical systems content focuses on mathematical modeling and determining stability of equilibria in linear and non-linear systems. Students focus on optimization in life science, using the first and second derivative tests as well as the marginal value theorem.
