Expanded Course Description
The ability to write clear, grammatical prose is not only a key English department learning objective and foundational for the English major. Being able to communicate with force and logic is also a competence every college graduate needs to acquire. Focusing on basic sentence mechanics, grammatical terminology, and the conventions of punctuation, ENG 209 The Craft of the Sentence teaches the technical terms and the conceptual principles needed to understand and to write clear grammatical sentences. Students will learn sentence diagramming in order to help see the patterns behind grammatical concepts; and they will learn to pay careful attention not only to the rules of grammar but also to the logic behind those rules. Other topics addressed include the nature of spoken vs. written language, dialects, standardized language, and some consideration of the historical background behind grammatical rules and practices.
