Expanded Course Description
Sociology 311 Research Methods is a required course for the Sociology major and minor. The course is designed to address all of the pertinent sociological methods commonly employed in sociological research. The course will cover both qualitative and quantitative methods, addressing the strengths and limitation of each approach. We will look at the different types of research conducted and the advantages/disadvantages of each method. The student should gain a thorough understanding of sociological research methods including qualitative methods such as participant observation, focus groups, ethnomethodology, content analysis, and conversational analysis. Additionally, students will be introduced to coding, basic measures of dispersion, data sampling, and how to create and interpret tables. |
