Expanded Course Description
This intermediate-level course sequence builds on the foundation established in First-Year Chinese (or its equivalent), and aims to further develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading and writing. Course materials introduce aspects of contemporary Chinese society, including its culture, history, ethical values, legends, geography, and people. Students are drilled on a variety of sentence patterns of increasing complexity, with ample opportunities (e.g. simulated role-play, structured skit presentations etc.) to practice communicating in Chinese in a wide range of situations in daily life. Students also get to work on their writing skills by writing guided compositions, journals, short narratives and descriptive essays. Second-Year curriculum also includes reading of level-appropriate Chinese newspaper clippings and viewing of selected original Chinese language films. While the primary focus is on enhancing students' overall fundamental linguistic competence, attention is also given to raising an awareness of the non-linguistic behavior of the speakers of the Chinese language, and to developing students' cross-cultural insights that are pivotal for successful learning of the Chinese language and culture. In addition, Second Year Chinese provides basic training in Chinese word processing and using Chinese in a digital environment.
