Expanded Course Description
This 5-credit course is a continuation of CHN 205 Accelerated Second Year Chinese II. It is designed for students who have completed CHN 205, or who performed well in CHN 202, or with equivalent proficiency (Intermediate Mid according to ACTFL benchmarks), to further develop their integrated language skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing. Adopting a functional and task-based approach, this course focuses on building students’ proficiency skills in all three modes of communication, as defined by ACTFL IPA (Integrated Performance Assessment) standards, i.e. interpretive listening, interpretive reading, interpersonal speaking, interpersonal writing, presentational speaking, and presentational writing. Through a large variety of language input, carefully-structured and cumulative activities and exercises, students will progress from listening and speaking skills to the more challenging skills of reading and writing. As the primary goal of the course, the emphasis on communicative skills is to develop students’ proficiency in everyday real-life Chinese. In the meantime, cultural competence is also fostered through rich and relevant cultural extensions.

This course is recognized as meeting the Group I -Arts and Letters general education requirement. Students whose Chinese proficiency has exceeded the scope of the course should not take it.
