Expanded Course Description
| The course centers on the popular novel Momo, written by German author Michael Ende in 1973. In extensive discussions students develop an understanding of issues and concerns that have been busying German authors from the late 1970s until now: problems of life in a capitalist society, Americanization of German social life, issues of communication and friendship, and pedagogical issues. This book is especially attractive to students in International Studies because it transgresses national boundaries by placing problems of European culture in a larger philosophical context. As a modern fairy tale it speaks to children, young adults, and cultural historians. Essay topics include: Comparisons between the utopian city of the fairytale and contemporary life, problems of time efficiency in the modern world, childhood in the 21st century. The class is taught in German and focuses on an extension of vocabulary, grammar, and on the improvement of critical writing. |
