| A specialized survey of Gothic architecture in western Europe (c. 1140 to c. 1500). This course gives special consideration to the constructional and structural developments of the Gothic period, but will also consider architecture in relationship to social, religious, and economic practices. |

Expanded Course Description
| Around 1140 builders in Europe began experimenting with new building designs and structural solutions as a result of social and cultural pressure, advancements in technology, and a new economic prosperity. Today we call the resulting style "Gothic." This class explores the religious and secular buildings constructed from around 1140 to 1500 with a particular focus on architectural technology, structure, and construction. It will also consider architecture in relationship to its religious, social, artistic, and economic contexts. |
