Expanded Course Description
Around 1140 builders in Europe began experimenting with new building designs and structural solutions as a result of social and cultural pressure, advancements in technology, and a new economic prosperity. Today we call the resulting style "Gothic." This class explores the religious and secular buildings constructed from around 1140 to 1500 with a particular focus on architectural technology, structure, and construction. It will also consider architecture in relationship to its religious, social, artistic, and economic contexts. |
