Expanded Course Description
History 302 is the middle quarter of a three-quarter sequence on modern European history. History 302 begins with the end of Napoleon's Europe and continues to the outbreak of World War I in 1914. The nineteenth century was a period of enormous change in Europe. This was period that witnessed widespread revolution, new forms of political mobilization, greater participation in the political process, even as traditional forms of political rule remained strong. Nineteenth-century Europe also experienced a fundamental shift from an agricultural to an industrial economy. Finally, the nineteenth-century was a period of massive expansion of Europe's overseas dominions in Asia, Africa, and the Middle East. This course examines these developments in relation to the social and cultural realities of everyday life. How were the large-scale changes in the nature of European politics, the economy, and Europe's place in the world experienced by the people of Europe? And how can different perspectives on the same set of events alter our understanding of that history?
