Expanded Course Description
DAN 260 is designed as an introduction to scientific research for non-science majors. It is proposed to fulfill a UO Science Group-satisfying general education requirement for all UO students. Science students are welcome and will find the focus in DAN 260 different from the focus of anatomy courses offered in Human Physiology.
DAN 260 will introduce the scientific method and its application in dance kinesiology. We will study the work of pioneers in dance kinesiology. This historical perspective will lead us to today’s cutting edge scientific research in dance. We will look at anatomy as the foundation of dance kinesiology and learn to critically evaluate research methods and outcomes that support theories and practices in dance training. Throughout, the fundamental precepts of the scientific method will be studied and their application in dance kinesiology as a field of study will be closely examined.
To demonstrate understanding of how questions are asked and answered in dance kinesiology, a culminating project to propose original scientific research in dance kinesiology will be required that will include a research questions, a critical review of relevant research, and a proposed method for the study. This individualized, student initiated research proposal will be supported by instructor feedback on well referenced introductions and research questions.
