Expanded Course Description
This course examines some of the central interests of Western civilization, including, ways of life, the order that people impose on the world that they experience, the relationship of the individual to the family, the natural world, the community, and the divine. Readings typically include major works from the Western canon: selections from the Iliad or Odyssey, the Hebrew Bible, the Greek historians Herodotus and Thucydides; a play of Sophocles and Plato?s Apology, as well as readings in Roman poetry and history, and one of the Gospels. Examples of Near Eastern, Greek, and Roman painting, sculpture, technology, and architecture complement the written sources. Skills emphasized in the course include reading critically in primary sources, analyzing works of visual art, and presenting clear arguments derived from the ancient evidence. |
