Expanded Course Description
| Daily, we log on to our social media accounts to communicate with friends and followers, or to catch up on the most recent news. In our downtime, we “turn on the TV” that is now our laptop, tablet device, or smartphone, so that we can escape the real world with our latest guilty pleasure. But, beyond serving as mediums for communication, information, and entertainment, the media we access, use, and consume is used to produce, reinforce, and challenge cultural ideologies and discourses about gender and diversity that bolster existing social inequalities and forms of oppression. Through this course, we will look at the role of various media in shaping and challenging “common sense” perspectives on gender, race, ethnicity, class, and sexuality which have implications for our own social experiences.
Throughout the course, you will read an array of scholarship from media studies, gender and women’s studies, and sociology, and analyze the ways various social groups are represented and discussed within media. Through lectures, small group discussions, and written assignments, this course challenges you to reflect critically on your knowledge and attitudes about gender and diversity, and the role media play in shaping your perspectives. |
