Expanded Course Description
J430-J530 Topics in Civil Rights and Film is a course on the histories and stories of racism, civil rights, and the documentary and dramatic films representing them in the United States throughout the 20th and 21st centuries. It is both a civil rights course and a cinema course. Its thesis is that the nation, now more than ever, must learn about the essential place of film (cinema, television, and now social media) in propagating racism and countering racism throughout its history; how film informs, educates, reports, transforms and inspires us about civil rights struggles today. This course is organized around screenings and discussions. Class participation and student voices are cornerstones. We will weave many issues, people, ideas and forces into the stories of racism, civil rights, and films representing them in the course, with the express purpose of developing insight into the situations in the world today.
