Expanded Course Description
Using a critical lens, these courses examine the ways in which global media produce and reproduce social, political, and economic disparities, as well the potential for media to provide alternative perspectives, viewpoints, and forms of representation. Courses in this area explore how domestic and international media institutions reinforce our social experiences of gender, ethnicity, race, class, nationality/citizenship, and more. In doing so, they address how power circulates through the global marketplace. By drawing on such concepts as ideology, hegemony, and intersectionality, J430 courses assess how social and cultural structures are developed and maintained, how power moves through media environments, and how media consumers accept and resist media trends.
