Expanded Course Description
In this course, students study Russian history, politics, economy, art, literature, gender issues and alternative spiritual trends along with traditional Orthodoxy. Since Russia is the place where Eastern and Western civilizations cross, lectures will focus on Eastern versus Western components of Russian cultural identity. Each lecture is followed by a discussion of basic cultural patterns along with a 10-minute practicum in socializing, doing business, theater, dancing, cooking, etc. the Russian way. Students are assigned weekly quizzes, midterm and final exams and a presentation on one of the topics provided by the instructor; they are also encouraged to take part in class discussions.
