Expanded Course Description
Screendance explores the historical, theoretical, and cultural contexts of screendance, a rapidly evolving, interdisciplinary art form at the intersection of dance, film, and new media technologies. Screendance combines elements of dance and film; its history and theory also draw on these disciplines. DAN 241 focuses on critical inquiry into screendance while locating that subject in the broader context of major social issues in the discipline of dance and film such as: questions of ephemerality and documentation, gender, race and identity in representations of the body, and aesthetic markers of the avant-garde. Students actively engage in choreographic and filmic analysis, historical inquiry, and culturally specific aesthetic literacy. While many courses exist in the practical making of screendance works, this course is dedicated to engaging in theoretical inquiry, analysis, and interpretation of screendance.
