Expanded Course Description
This course introduces students to the law that regulate our environment, and to the policy choices that shape those laws. Recognizing that such laws will largely determine the quality of the natural world that students will inherit, the course takes a citizen-centered focus, underscoring the potential for students, as citizens, to influence government policy. It explains the basic laws that regulate many aspects of our society, including: air and water pollution, endangered species and their habitat, public lands management, logging, grazing, mining, oil and gas development, coal mining, land development, emissions, and others. This course will also cover laws that govern government environmental analysis of proposed actions. Throughout the class, students will gain a broader contextual understanding of the law, viewing its success and failures from moral, political, scientific, equity, and economic perspectives. |
