Expanded Course Description

21st-century art is a dynamic field of interdisciplinary study which emerges from a broad variety of materials, methods, ideas and research on the part of contemporary artists, within the systems and structures of the art world. This course is designed to critically explore a number of thematic veins that run through the contemporary arts, with focus on ways artists address issues of particular resonance in society today; things such as identity, race, gender, climate change, digital culture, social and civic engagement, memorializing significant collective experiences, and the the role of storytelling in building cultural narratives. Through a variety of reading, lecture and writing assignment formats students will learn how to engage with, observe, interpret, and critically evaluate contemporary artworks in all their diversity.
