Expanded Course Description
This course surveys the history of Black American media production and representation from the mid-19th century to the late 20th century. Through examining scholarly research and media criticism and analyzing newspapers, television, and film, students will explore the ways Black Americans have used media to address social injustices, build political consciousness, strengthen in-group belonging, and challenge mainstream media narratives and discourses. Students will practice using qualitative content analysis, thematic analysis, and textual analysis as methods to examine media and will conduct original research.
