  MATH 211   Fund Element Math I >4 4.00 cr.
Structure of the number system, logical thinking, topics in geometry, simple functions, and basic statistics and probability. Calculators, concrete materials, and problem solving are used when appropriate. Covers the mathematics needed to teach grades K-8. Sequence.

Expanded Course Description
This is a sequence of courses especially designed for prospective elementary and middle school teachers. Mathematical reasoning proof and full understanding of the concepts is emphasized.

Text: "A Problem Solving Approach to Mathematics for Elementary School Teachers", Billstein, Libeskind and Lott.

Exploration with patterns and various sequences including geometric and arithmetic sequences. Nth term and sum especially of arithmetic sequences. Problem solving strategies with emphasis on word problems. Algebraic thinking and Logic.

Sets, Whole Numbers and Functions: Describing Sets, set operations and their properties, number of subsets of a finite set. One to one correspondence between two sets and its use to define the concept of less than. Operations on whole numbers. The Distributive property of multiplication over addition and its uses, the division algorithm. Functions and graphs, composition of functions.

Numeration Systems and whole number computations. Understanding of base ten and other bases in particular base 2, 5 and 12. Algorithms for arithmetic operations in base ten and other bases and why they work. Models for traditional algorithms and alternative algorithms. System of integers and justification of their properties.
